How the estimate works
Every figure comes from a published local source: Checkatrade for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, published specialist prices from local firms, hamuch quotes for Nottingham, and Severn Trent's own figure for the upper end of supply pipe replacement.
For replacement jobs, the calculator places you inside the published range using a weighted score between 0 and 1:
- How long is the pipe run from the boundary to the house: weight 0.5, scored short (under 10 m) = 0, medium (10–25 m) = 0.5, long (over 25 m) = 1.
- What is on top of the pipe for most of the way: weight 0.4, scored lawn or soil = 0, block paving or slabs = 0.6, tarmac or concrete = 1.
- Is the supply shared with neighbours: weight 0.1, scored no = 0, not sure = 0.5, yes = 1.
Your estimate is the low end of the band plus the score times the width of the band, with a margin of 15% of the band either side, rounded to the nearest £10. Detection jobs show the published price directly, because it doesn't vary by pipe length in the same way.
The water figure is simple arithmetic: 1 litre a minute for a year is 525,600 litres.
